ABOUT
Join us on Sunday the 26 th of May at The Commons for an evening with the Tiana Amari
Quintet!
Tiana Amari is a bassist and composer from Gugulethu, Cape Town. As a former mentee of
the late Spencer Mbadu, Amari has been schooled in the traditions of South African jazz
while also being exposed to the styles of Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke.
She has played with many top musicians in Cape Town, including Nobuhle Ashanti, Steven
Sokuyeka, Nduduzo Mkhize, and others. Tiana was also recruited by Afrikaans pop legend
Karen Zoid for her highly successful national tour earlier this year.
Other than being a technically gifted bassist, Amari is also an evocative composer. Her
compositions come from her own life experiences and have an emphasis on connection and
healing.
The Tiana Amari Quintet features some of the brightest young musicians in Cape Town:
Esihle Valela – saxophones
Owethu Ndwandwe – keys
Tiana Amari - bass
Thulani Mkatshane (Da Drummer SA) – percussion
Khayalethu Njikelana – drums
The evening will also feature music selections by Word of Mouth creator Rèné du Toit (as
Rooibosnolove) and trumpeter, composer, and record collector Keegan Steenkamp from
6pm before the live performance by the Tiana Amari Quintet at 8pm.
We recommend coming early for the selections and the superb food and drinks on sale at
The Commons.
After a successful launch event with Peter Ndlala’s Unit 5, this second Word of Mouth
offering promises to be one for the books. We hope to see you there!
